Massive Cape Town march in solidarity with Gaza
Tens of thousands of people marched through Cape Town city centre this morning in solidarity with the people of Gaza, and opposing Israeli military action.
The march was largely composed of members of Cape Town’s Muslim community. It also included members of the Jewish community, trade unions, ANC supporters, Ses’khona and a small group of people marching under the rainbow flag, symbol of gay rights.
At the time of writing, the march appears to have taken place peacefully. No violent incidents have been reported.
It was one of the largest marches in Cape Town since 1994 but without an aerial photograph it is impossible to estimate its size accurately. To get a sense of how large it was, from the bridge over Hertzog Boulevard for much of the morning one could not see the beginning or end of the march.
