Dr Suhayl Essa was on duty at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital’s emergency room when a fire destroyed part of the hospital in April 2021. Since then he and his colleagues have been rotating between different hospitals across Gauteng, dealing with a dysfunctional health system.
